MadHatter considers himself an "everyman" in the underground entertainment business. While he may not be the best at what he does, he does put in an unbelievable amount of effort into his work and in learning to do better.
Always learning, always evolving, he not only runs the Scrub Club labels, he also produces music, records and mixes albums, spits complex, mathematical flows, contributes artwork both digital and traditional, does graphics design for the site and printed products, builds and keeps all of the Scrub sites updated, creates gaming mechanics, handles promotions and public relations including booking, and lots of other tasks that most labels have to outsource. It's a lot of work, but keeping the labels going is just as important to him as a step family. Except... a good step family.
He has gained awards and achievements big and small for his music, played a few dozen shows and helped out with much more, and is a well-known "good guy" in the independent Hip Hop scene.
In the music game since 2001 and an always dedicated worker in the official job market, he knows a great deal on how to handle business and make good development decisions and hopes to someday to run an all-ages entertainment venue that features art, spoken word, live music, and food fit for fat kids like himself. That way, he can keep on supporting his vision as well as helping out as many other artists as he possibly can.
Scrub Club is his dream, and he has already accomplished what he sent out to do in the first place... helped at least one person with his music. Now that he has what he's always wanted, he drives forward to enjoy the rest of the ride. It's all plus, baby! |

DJ CutterJ (born Aaron Wirtz), is a 25 year old Wichita native who enjoys all types of music. "Thrift Hop" (instrumental Hip Hop with thrift store crap mixed on top) might begin to describe his performance style, but his track selection is continuously changing as his journey continues.
How did it all begin?
CutterJ comes from an extensive background of music theatre, dance, and served as the frontman for the bands The Media and Bliss On Tap during his high school years. After graduating, he developed a fondness for the electronic music scene because it gave him an outlet for his favorite type of dance- Pop N' Lock, which he learned from a video he found at the flea market when he was 16. Seriously. As time went on, an idea began to develop. It consumed him. He put an ad in the now-defunct F5 newspaper looking for musicians or DJs to collaborate with. One person responded, a DJ, and they began the brainstorming process. The project fizzled quickly due to lack of direction. It became clear to him that if HE were the DJ, he could still incorporate other types of performance into the mix once he got his chops on the decks up.
So he made the plunge. Starting with the "Stanton Battle Pack," he started to learn how to mix, scratch, and made an attempt at beat juggling. Thrift stores and flea markets are homes away from home for CutterJ, so digging through dusty vinyl came naturally. He gradually upgraded his gear and started playing a few shows around town with the help of good friend and mentor DJ Primm, one of his biggest inspirations.
Primm started a monthly poetry slam called M Is For Monday that featured a host and a DJ. CutterJ performed once (check out our YouTube for the videos) and Primm asked him to step in and DJ while she was out of town. Who was to be the host? You guessed it- the one and only MadHatter. Chester and ShelShocker were in the house too, but CutterJ didn't really understand what Scrub Club was all about back then.
The slam didn't last too long after that. Time passed, and he played more shows, struggling with the realization of his vision. He gradually developed a fondness for the 100-120 BPM range, as opposed to 80-100, which is what he started out with. The dream of playing original music became a reality with Serato Scratch Live and an MPC 1000, and things started to come into focus.
On August 25th, 2007, CutterJ was asked to organize the talent for a segment of "Crazy Jay's Sleep with the Best Fest," a poorly organized and promoted fundraiser for the Kansas Food Bank. Naturally, he invited the Scrubs to perform and hilarity ensued. Imagine a small vintage clothing shop called Harmonious Posh, normal people in and out the door all day long, and a shirtless Chester getting down to some Scrubby shit. CutterJ was one of the only members of the audience, but a partnership seemed appealing. He always admired the originality and genuine good vibes he got from MadHatter and the Scrubs, and spun at MadHatter and ShelShocker's wedding reception.
It feels like the "Wrap it Up" Box is flashing somewhere.
Anyway, CutterJ accepted Hatter's offer to be the newest member of the label. The opportunity to hook up with nerdy chicks was just too appealing. The future as part of the label is bright, and his mantra is everywhere he looks.
The body heals.
The body is well.
The body absurd. |

I am 22 years old and just finished my degree at the University of Minnesota, studying Graphic Design and Journalism / Mass Communications. I was also recently hired on as a staff member at Game Informer Online! I can't say how excited I am to be a staff member and I look forward to going into work every day. You can read some of my stuff at Gameinformer.com!
My non-professional goals are to create art in any way possible. I used to think that I did not know what I wanted to do with my life until I started college. I look back now and I realize that I have always been in love with the aesthetic in life, I just needed school to show me what direction to take. I love painting, drawing, scrapbooking, photography, sculpting, and writing. My artistic goals in life are to create, inspire, or commission art.
Modeling has also been an artistic outlet for me over the last few years. It is an amazing experience that lets me be things I could never be in reality! Fantasy-themed photo shoots such as my Ice Queen adventure also greatly prepared me for the world of cosplay. Modeling is a passion of mine, and I hope you can tell from my photos!
If you can’t tell already, I am a geek at heart. I really only came into my nerdy self over the last few years. Up until the 2007 Game Developers Conference, I was a solo gamer. Becky “Aktrez” Young found me through a video game group on MySpace, but other than that I had never joined a forum, used a website to check a review, or really participated in an online community. I had no idea what I was missing out on... My gaming routine consisted of playing games with my brothers and a weekly game night with all the guys. It was not because I was not interested in an online community; I simply did not know they existed to the extent that they do.
When I was introduced to the larger online “geek culture,” I went crazy. I am now extremely active in many online communities and I am very lucky for all of the opportunities that have come out of them. I am the “Video Game Vixen” for the Girls Entertainment Network, a website that I write for regularly. I also write a weekly cosplay blog for Japanator.com, a great website about otaku culture.
Other nerdy facts: I collect comics (Top Cow and Aspen primarily), watch anime, and cosplay. I also can’t get enough vampire novels (even the trashy ones), and I eagerly await any geek convention that comes to town. I have a DS autographed by Miyamoto himself. I get way too excited whenever I see anything Final Fantasy related. I worked at Game Crazy just for the perks. I almost cried listening to the music during the Video Games Live concert. I love female game characters that are hot and kick ass. I have three cats: Donut, Church, and Tex- If you are a Halo fan you will get the names. I also have a dog named Kairi, which should be semi self-explanatory. My hubby and I have an entire room dedicated to video games, with 16+ systems and over 400 games.
I turned every project in school I could get my hands on into something about video games or comics.
In the end I am an uber nerd and I love it. I would never have it any other way even if that means that I am not always understood. I hope you like my pages here and I look forward to getting to know you better! |

I'm a scrubby chick because I grew up with Mario, dance to them beats, and read them books with the black and white doodles. I'm a Scrub... because I do what I want!
When I drink, I either become ghetto or a wrestler. I love dancing and I think it's funny when people get pissed off when you're having more fun than them at a show. Jealousy is something I can not stand. I love swimming, being on top of stuff (mountains, buildings, on tall people's shoulders, etc), drawing, building things, and making people laugh. I'm a big-time people watcher. I live alone and have a job as a server. I just graduated with a BFA from Montevallo and I have no clue as to what to do next or where to go. I'm a dreamer, I like to believe.
I'm more of a troublemaker than others believe. |
