It was good.

I laughed.

But, it definitely leans towards the whole... Lonely Island Category, thingy... ma-bober...

Now whether or not this is a good thing, Depends on whether or not one still finds TLI funny, Or at this point "I'm on a boat" just plain makes you cringe at just the sight of one... A boat, that is.

Now this could win some cross over success, along side the wave of coattailers, Like LMFAO... If there will be any waves left, that is...

I mean, it depends... Does hatter want to get involved in this whole "White Frat Boy" College humor rap fiasco?

Perhaps I should listen to more cuts. Perhaps I'm wrong.

It sounds (and looks) quite good, but I get the feeling (mostly from the site) that Southside wouldn't really fit in with Scrub Club. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Southside (and I actually like the song), but my guts tells me they would be better off elsewhere.

:faill: OFFICIAL JUDGE COMMENTARY - MADHATTER

EVALUATION OF YOUR CHALLENGE 1 TRACK

The instrumental: Completely original, and I can tell Thunderball had fun making this one. It reminds me of old Kottonmouth beats (when they were good)... It's minimalistic, electronic, but not too electronic... switched up every once and awhile, has a rolling chorus which makes you not just just nod your head, but if you're in a particularly goofy mood like I usually am, swing your head all the way around.

Timing: I honestly didn't even pay attention to timing because I was having too much fun. Let me go back and listen again... Aw yeah, timing is REAL important when you've got such a simple-style beat, and you guys did real, real good. A complaint? Sometimes when you guys overdub eachother, some of you are a little early and late, and that bugs my ears a bit, but I'm being picky here. This track is tight-knit.

Energy: Yup, energy is there. Read the comment below. These guys would be great live.

Emotion: These guys are having fun and don't give a good god damn if you care or not, haha. Awesome.

Musicality: These guys definitely know how to use the beat to their advantage and mix it up with the different breaks in the music. As quirky as they are, I would definitely say this is something they do well.

Creativeness: Having heard their first cd, I can assure you Southside is creative, haha. I say that because they're nutty as hell and you never know what to expect. This song does kind of have the appeal of a Lonely Island-type track, but it's not parody music on purpose. These guys just rock it and come silly sometimes as well. "We talk about our dicks too much" is now the thing looping in my head today. Gee thanks, guise. Haha.

Flow variety: Yup, plenty of different styles and cadences here, which I loved.

Vocal quality: I have a major gripe with the way the vocals were mixed on the album I've heard from you guys, but that has nothing to do with this competition. I just had to get that out of the way to make a point here - Your vocals sound nice and crisp on this track, and everyone's levels are pretty equal. Keep this mixing style up, it tops the other things I've heard from you guys (in my opinion).

Additional comments: I really enjoyed this song, and I'm not scared of a little variety on the label. I can see Southside with us with a bit of tweaking, sure. This song alone shows me that you're dedicated to challenges and that you would all probably be a blast live. I have no major problems with this track at all. It's a keeper for sure. Oh, and mentioning Scrub Club in the first verse could never hurt, right? :P there's always room for improvement, but being a busy group, you guys really impressed me on the work you put in in the time frame you had.

EVALUATION OF YOUR MUSIC SITE UPDATES

First impression without having to scroll or click through anything: The official site? The image that stands out leads me to believe these guys play a lot of live shows, and that instantly helps their credibility. Although it took me a split second to find it, the navigation is right here on the page, but an average listener may have to look for a bit to see it as well. They'd have to be dumb to completely miss it, but yeah. Hah. Everything's crisp and it looks good. The MySpace? Big splash banner displaying your name, easy enough. Here's an average misconception, I imagine... Is your name Southside and your album title is "Liquors," Or are you Southside Liquors? I can see how people can mix that up.

Graphical attractiveness: The official site? Crisp. Professional. Decent color scheme (I love that color of orange, and I think it's been obvious when I use it so much). There's not too many images to be seen here, but the ones that are their (logos and that big show poster wall image) work. The MySpace? There are no graphics besides their next performance and the banner I already mentioned. It could use some more. Color scheme is pleasing.

Cohesiveness: The official site? It all makes sense and comes together. The MySpace? As straightforward as can be.

Amount of content: The official site? Not too much. A bio, static show schedule, and an image gallery would have been awesome. I like your recommendations (oh look, Hipster, Please!) page. You guys have a million stories to tell, I bet... so put up more content! The MySpace? Same deal... At least you've got some photos here, but an official bio would have been nice, and the recommendations text may be a little too much for your left panel. You're using your blog, which is cool. Moar moar MOAR content, pleeeez.

Overall professionalism of the sites: The official site is professional. Could use more content, but it works, it's simple to use, and it covers most of the bases. Good job. The MySpace is just fine for a MySpace.

Additional comments: I can't stress this enough - MORE CONTENT! Give your fans something to sink their teeth into once they've already been pulled in by your music, or they might get bored and head right back out with nothing extra to do.

EVALUATION OF YOUR CHALLENGE 1 TRACK

The instrumental: Sounded good, albeit a lil' too electronic for my blood. I did really dig the fog-horn bass-wave thang in the back ground.

Timing: No egregious errors really stood out and kicked my ears in...

Energy: You had plenty, even when divided between multiple people.

Emotion: You guys sound like you're into it with every word.

Musicality:What Hatter Said. You guys know your way around a Microphone.

Creativeness: Lulzy music to make fans Lol, what's not to love? They only reminded me of TLI when someone pointed it out, untill then it was stand alone dick rap (Wrap?). You can make a million tracks about dicks, and I'll still laugh @ every one.

Flow variety: Plenty switching of styles, dudes, and cadences.

Vocal quality: Sounded good to me, but then again I R NOT A PRODUCR.

Additional comments: I think the fact that you guys are so different from the competition is a strong point. I'm not interested in a clone of KTP, Def, or Hatter.

EVALUATION OF YOUR MUSIC SITE UPDATES

First impression without having to scroll or click through anything: *Eyeing the flyers*"These dudes have a kickass graphics design dude!"

Graphical attractiveness: I liked it alot, even the flyers are well done. Very professional.

Cohesiveness: Simple flash, to the point without a hint of gaudy.

Amount of content: Seemed a lil' slim, but not horribly so..... It would appear that you guys rely on your music to tell people what you're about, and I like that.

Overall professionalism of the sites: Good.

Additional comments: The first track I ever heard from you guys was InYaMouth. I Lol'd pretty hard. I wasn't expecting what you guys are bringing, especially with a name like Southside. <3

Postby southside on Fri Aug 21, 2009 12:28 pm

Thanks for the insight, folks...

First off, yes, the name is Southside and our last album was titled "Liquors".

There's a bit of story there. When we first started making beats and rapping on a 4-track in Columbia, Missouri in the mid 90's (!) there were only 2 liquor stores in town.. Southside Liquors and Eastgate Party Shop. Thus, Southside was born -> Represent! Only thing Eastgate had to offer was the occasional box of Frankenberry, but hell no we ain't gettin our 40's there.

and then came crunk.

Gee, thanks. Now every time you say Southside, everyone thinks you're some fool ghost-riding your $1500 Honda tricked out in $6000 worth of bling and rapping about dirty south stuff. We almost officially changed our name to "Southside Liquors". Being creative design nerds, we had many discussions about the pros and cons of a re-branding campaign but decided to live with it for now.

and no, we're not trying to be the next Lonely Island, but yes it is supposed to make you chuckle... anyone in the Northwest should come check out a live show sometime, or hopefully we'll be coming to your neighborhood soon!

re: dick references.

upon hearing a pre-release copy of our new album, a buddy of our said:

"have you ever noticed how Southside is always rapping about either their dicks, computers, or the apocalypse?'"

yes, Brent, we noticed.

thanks for the inspiration for our new song!

whoa...my ears are ringing. haha...no seriously though, its obvious you guys know how to put a track together. Good job. Hilarious & fun lyrics...like the samples (the girl "heyy!") good times. I just didn't really like the beat. Mostly cuz it's just not my style...I would have liked to hear this track overtop of a fun up-beatish summer jam. I expected live instruments...cuz I think that was on your myspace.

Welcome to the board finally, ya Southside bum! I assume this is Thunderball as well?

Funny background story on both of those, I'd say you summed up your buddy's expectations perfectly. :P

Something about this song... I dunno. I just like it. The hook makes me feel happy.

:faill: OFFICIAL JUDGE COMMENTARY - BENJAMIN BEAR

EVALUATION OF YOUR CHALLENGE 1 TRACK

The instrumental: 9 Reminded me of a Doctor Popular beat, I like.

Timing: 7 There's a point where timing becomes irrelevant because the track is awesomely fun.

Energy: 9 You has it.

Emotion: 9 I believe you when you say you rap about your dicks too much, and I think you do too.

Musicality: 8 I was impressed by the experimentation and the use of instruments. You made something original and that's really cool.

Creativeness: 8 The track was definately creative and I had some lulz.

Flow variety: 8 I wouldn't go enter yourselves in a "world's greatest rapper" competition, but you switched it up and you had fun, and that's the most important thing.

Vocal quality: 8 I could hear you and it was mixed well. I wasn't amazed by the vocal production, but this wasn't bad at all.

Additional comments: This was pretty funny, and I really enjoyed it. I think you guys would rock live, and I would book you in a second to play a show with EPP, it's a very similar vibe. Does that make me biased? idk, maybe.

Total Score: 8

EVALUATION OF YOUR MUSIC SITE UPDATES

First impression without having to scroll or click through anything: Did you make this in iWeb? ;)

Graphical attractiveness: This looks like a professional musician's website, it doesn't offend my eyes.

Cohesiveness: It is.

Amount of content: Standard content, throw in a gig calendar and a store and you're golden.

Overall professionalism of the sites: Professional site is professional.

Additional comments: Add the two things I mentioned above, and I have nothing else to say.

score: 8

OFFICIAL JUDGE COMMENTARY - KOURTNEY

EVALUATION OF YOUR CHALLENGE 1 TRACK

The instrumental: Fuckin' catchy. I definitely dug it. Fit your song perfectly :)

Timing: Very good.

Energy: Excellent. You guys would be so much fun to see live.

Emotion: Great. You guys know that you're here to entertain, and entertain me you did.

Musicality: You guys are definitely very different from everyone else on the label. Overall I thought it was great.

Creativeness: I see where people are coming from with the Lonely Island comments, but I don't think you guys are that similar to them. You're very different from everyone else on the label, and I think you guys can bring something fresh and new to Scrub Club. Your different sound really works to your advantage.

Flow variety: Lots of variations, and all of them flowed well. I was feelin' it.

Vocal quality: Sounded great to me.

Additional comments: Different, catchy, and well done. :D

Score: 8/10

EVALUATION OF YOUR MUSIC SITE UPDATES

First impression without having to scroll or click through anything: Both look very good.

Graphical attractiveness: The official site- Very nice. Clean, organized, attractive. Myspace- Same deal. Good job guys.

Cohesiveness: See above.

Amount of content: The official site- Decent. Could use a photo or video gallery or something. Some pics or video footage of you guys playing live would be nice. Myspace- Pretty good. Would like to know some more about you guys. Throw up a bio or something.

Overall professionalism of the sites: Both look very well done. Kudos.

:faill: OFFICIAL JUDGE COMMENTARY - LAIKA

EVALUATION OF YOUR CHALLENGE 1 TRACK

The instrumental: Basically, I loved this beat from start to finish.

Timing: It seems really hit or miss with groups in this genre to dub voices in properly. You guys got it 99% right, little tiny flubs here and there, but nothing that takes away from the song at all.

Energy: Definitely an energetic track, gets the head nodding right from the start.

Emotion: It's always good when artists sound like they are actually enjoying themselves, and this track delivers that.

Musicality: The vocals work perfectly with the beat .

Creativeness: I didn't know anything about you guys prior to hearing this track, so I can't judge this against your previous work. It seems pretty creative to me in general, I know some people TRY this, but a lot of them fail, you make it work. The only thing I'll say is that I didn't get the Lonely Island feel some people got, but it would have helped if I didn't have someone walk past me and ask if I was listening to 3OH!3

Flow variety: Yup, plenty of different styles and cadences here, which I loved.

Vocal quality: Voclas sounded good to me, I could hear everyone over the beat and without anyone sounding fuzzy.

Additional comments: It was a good track, different from everything else I expect to hear in this contest. It's not the breakout track for me, but ti's definitely a good one.

EVALUATION OF YOUR MUSIC SITE UPDATES

First impression without having to scroll or click through anything: The Myspace page is, yet again, a Myspace page. It's so hard to set yourself apart from anyone else on there. It's a clean enough Myspace, not cluttered and annoying. The official site...This is just a general gripe that your site has fallen in to. I would love it if sites didn't automatically start playing ANYTHING when I click their link. Outside of that, I like both sites.

Graphical attractiveness: It looks like a lot of time and effort went into both, and so far your official site is the only one that has been able to grab my attention.

Cohesiveness: Both work well without being over the top.

Amount of content: No where near enough info on the official site. Going there to want to know more about you left me wanting.

Overall professionalism of the sites: Very professional and well done.

Additional comments: I had no clue what to expect with this track, and I wasn't disappointed. In the amount of time it took me to type this up the song has grown on me a little bit more.

:faill: OFFICIAL JUDGE COMMENTARY - DEAFINITION

EVALUATION OF YOUR CHALLENGE 1 TRACK

The instrumental:All custom I'm assuming. I'm loving every bit of it.

Timing:Timing was spot on. I have no qualms with the off dubs that people are talking about because it sounds intentional. When dubs are layered that many times to make it sound like crew dubbing, the dubs NEED to be a little off or they sound robotic.

Energy: You guys are bringing a nice party feel to this.

Emotion:Same as above. I see myself getting drunk playing beer pong to this song in the very near future.

Musicality: You guys are different and aren't afraid to show it, and that sets you aside from every other artist. You do a great job of bringing something new to the table.

Creativeness: Same as above. When I first checked your myspace, what had caught my attention first and foremost was your crazy, off the wall dubs and extras in the background. I love it.

Flow variety: Well you wont be winning any awards anytime soon for most intricate flow, but who needs to with the energy you guys put out?

Vocal quality: Digging it. As long as I can hear you and it doesn't sound like your rapping into a tin can on a string, that's a good start.

Additional comments: I refuse to agree with anyone saying you don't fit in with Scrub Club because you sound too much like a group that I don't think you sound anything like. Scrub Club is about unifying the different genres of music and bringing them together with all a common purpose. Family, friends, and music that everyone can enjoy without having to sacrifice the extra money they could be using on something more needed. I think you easily fit in this picture.

I can't help but feel misunderstood, different music is no problem, and they (and pretty much everybody) are quite welcome indeed, but the site gave me the gut feeling that the persona might not fit in the group. Of course, we shouldn't all be clones of eachother, but for some reason I just got that feeling about Southside. I can't stress enough that this is just a feeling I get, it probably means nothing.

EVALUATION OF YOUR CHALLENGE 1 TRACK

The instrumental: Totally in your face. Some of the drums felt a little too hot but I'd prefer that over a weak-ass beat. I can see how this would really get a crowd moving!

Timing: Sounded experienced and in control.

Energy: Off the hook. This track reminded me of some of the cuts on the 2 Skinnee Js album Super Mercado. An unapologetic kick in the ass.

Emotion: No real emotion but none needed.

Musicality: The vocals interacted well with the beat and I appreciated the scratch solo.

Creativeness: Not my favorite lyrical content ever, but it worked. You definitely stayed true to the title of the track!

Flow variety: Nice!

Vocal quality: Easily discernible words let me focus on feeling the song and not trying to figure out what you were saying.

Additional comments: I'd like to see you guys live. I imagine it's a hell of a show!
